CHARACTER NAME: Daisy Grace Dubois
CHARACTER AGE: 22
SPECIES: Half-witch, half-siren
BACKGROUND & HISTORY:Grace Dubois was born to a witch mother and a siren father after a brief affair beneath the moonlight on a beach in Massachusetts. Her mother never saw Grace’s father again, once he disappeared back beneath the waves. Grace’s mother, Elle, had Grace in Boston, where she found work for a publishing firm run entirely by witches. Grace grew up practicing witchcraft, fully immersed in magic and all that came with it. At the age of eight, she discovered a passion for using her magic in various ways, particularly practical spells to help with homework and housework, with the encouragement of her mother and her aunt Faith, who lived with them to help raise Grace and support her mother. Grace’s mother eventually remarried when Grace was nine, to a fellow witch named Bryce, who became a father to Grace, who stopped asking questions about her real father when said question caused her mother to burst into tears. At the age of ten, Grace became an older sister to a brother named Aaron, whom she adores with all of her heart to this day, even if she did complain at first at having to help watch him.
Grace grew up in a fairly well-off home, her mother, stepfather, and aunt all working for the same publishing company which allowed for Grace to attend a rather prestigious private school. It was on her journey to and from school that Grace first took note of the man with the greyish-brown beard watching her from across the street. Only after she graduated high school and left for college in Vermont did Grace recognize that the man bore the same eyes as her own.
Leaving home after coming to this realization proved rough for Grace; she struggled keeping up with her schoolwork and fighting against the desire to chase after her birth father. She wound up falling in with a rather boisterous crowd of fellow witches, who began teaching her mischievous charms used for the sake of personal enjoyment rather than any sort of benefit. She fought her personal demons by fucking her way through her dorm building and anyone else that was interested; she had a pregnancy scare, once, but that never deterred her. Grace’s former childlike enthusiasm shifted into a sense of puckishness bordering on reckless behavior; only after an incident in which Grace almost killed her younger brother Aaron the summer before her junior year of college did Grace finally begin to attempt to mend her ways, throwing herself into her Catholic faith, determined not to involve Aaron with her magic ever again. Elle and Bryce were both gravely disappointed in her and threatened to kick her out of the house, and the guilt Grace endured following the incident impacted her life forever.
At her college graduation ceremony, during which she managed to graduate with honors, majoring in criminology in the hopes of moving on to law school in Boston, Grace finally confronts her father, who only hugs her and hands her a piece of paper with the words ‘Siren Cove,’ written on it before disappearing again. Confused, hurt, and angered, especially considering the unpleasantness of her college education, Grace, instead of pursuing law school, set off seeking both her father and the mysterious place known as ‘Siren Cove.’
Grace arrives in Siren Cove looking for her father, just recently graduated from college. As a skilled witch with something of a tumultuous past, very much now in sure of her powers, Grace sets up her own business, Crossfire Investigations, as her love of more morally ambiguous magic grows, the more she learns of Siren Cove.
Arriving in Siren Cove also triggers her siren nature, so she is now coming to terms with that as well.
PERSONALITY: Grace, growing up, was a bright, curious child relatively accepting of the environment she was raised in. Her mother and aunt loved her dearly, and so did Bryce, when he married her mother. She was cared for, adored, and she delighted in magic. Though she did struggle with a normal sense of jealousy at her brother’s birth, Grace now loves him more than anything in the world and will do anything to protect him.
After her college experiences, Grace is less open than she once was, more hardened to letting anyone else in after both herself and her ‘friends’ almost seriously injured her brother. She smiles well and often enough; she appears playful, casting whimsical charms and occasionally indulging in one of the old pranks she learned in college, one of the least harmful ones, of course. Her experience with the drama clubs at her schools has allowed her to perfect a mask of her former childish delight in the world around her. To the outside world, Grace is an outgoing, if stubborn, young woman.
Truthfully, Grace is still struggling to find herself. She is searching for her father, wondering what he meant by bringing her to Siren Cove, and also why he keeps disappearing on her. She also still has guilt about what she did to her brother. She keeps all of this close to the chest, so that no one looking in can suspect anything. Grace desperately wants a new start for herself, new friends, and a new life.
OPINION OF THE RIVALRY: Grace, being new to town, will of course hear about the rivalry and want to study it, thinking it might have clues to her own past or some connection to her father. When she reads more about it, she will ultimately side with the Coombs, for Grace has never been ashamed about being a witch and has little thought for those who look down on magic.
LIFESTYLE: Grace, just graduating from college, is just starting to make her own place in the world. She has kept up her business of selling fabrics and clothing throughout her college years, even as she struggled to keep herself afloat. She has always been rather good with money, so she does have some savings, to allow her to find a cheap, small apartment and begin setting up her life in Siren Cove. Of course, she is looking for more steady work, particularly in theatre.
Grace, with her magic and sewing abilities, pretty much makes most of her own clothes, though she does enjoy shopping at thrift stores for garments she can improve upon for herself. Since college, she has developed a caffeine addiction, so she will be at the Quill quite often. As a proud witch, she’ll also be searching for local witch haunts, so expect her at places like Coombs Tavern quite a bit as well.
Grace developed a smoking habit in college, one that she still struggles with currently. It’s her go-to for stress relief, one of the coping mechanisms she still falls back upon. She also still uses sex as a coping mechanism, in her own way. She has yet to have a steady relationship, and she rather enjoys the freedom being single allows her, so she has no qualms with one night stands. Indeed, they’re really all she knows of the whole dating scene to begin with.
POWERS & ABILITIES: Half-witch, half-siren. Grace is still unaware of her siren heritage and fully embraces her powers as a witch. She specializes in charms, particularly those of an offensive nature. She’s also practiced in spells of a more sexual nature, from her experiments in college. In spite of many hours of practice, Grace’s transformative magical abilities are her weakest.
Because of the way her witch powers are nurtured and her siren abilities left to neglect, Grace’s siren abilities are only going to manifest in a specific way. She actually can’t sing for shit, nor can she persuade anyone by manipulating their will. Her experiences as an actress in her college theatre department were enhanced, unbeknownst to Grace, by her siren heritage in that they instantly captivated and held the audiences’ attention. This will happen whenever Grace takes to the stage, perhaps in a community production of some sort, or speaks in front of large crowds.
The main manifestation of Grace’s siren abilities only occurs when she is emotionally fragile enough for her mask to slip. As she discovers in Siren Cove, when she gets upset, Grace’s eyes start to glow and her hair turns white. Electricity will start to emerge and crackle from her skin, dangerous to anyone who might be nearby. This is significant in that it has only happened to Grace once before: the night she almost killed her brother.
